343 miles

Day 1 started very much as planned, i had already prepped the bike and finalized packing the night before, so pretty much up and out first thing in the morning

The plan was to cover almost 400 miles today, the eastern coast of NC up to just west of Bryson City, an easy ask in a car, not so much on a motorbike. (even a GS)…

About an hour into my trip came the first surprise, torrential rain, thunder and lightning! (bad enough to make me pull off the highway and seek some shelter till it passed). A little over an hour lost for that stop…

Then came the next surprise, the “comfort” seat on my GS Adventure is anything but comfortable, I found that i could ride ok for about 30-45 mins and then i needed to take a break to get the circulation back into my butt and legs…

Then the final kicker – about 20 miles from Asheville, i hit standing traffic going up the mountain. An hour of stop / start on a major incline isn’t too much fun…

So 70 miles short of my planned destination for today, i called it a day and stopped at the Holiday Inn in Asheville for the night.

Still, 330 miles for the day wasn’t too bad for my first longish trip – dinner and bed early was the call for the night…
